After reviewing five eligible randomized clinical trials involving 497 total participants, the authors found that berberine and silymarin coadministration could lead to an "advantageous improvement in lipid and glucose profile" namely, it could lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein ("bad") cholesterol, and triglycerides while increasing high-density lipoprotein ("good") cholesterol.43 Such impacts are why berberine may be particularly useful to people with type 2 diabetes
