Testosterone The principal androgen, testosterone, is an anabolic-androgenic steroid hormone which is synthesized from cholesterolproduced mainly in Leydig cells in men, and the ovary (25%) and adrenalzona fasciculata (25%) in women, via conversion from progesterone, with the remaining ~50% being produced from circulating androstenedione (Burger, 1 in healthy young men and 0.11.7 nmol.L 1 in healthy menstruating women under 40 y (Handelsman et al., 2018)
